ALFA: Evaluation of Biogas Potential

R&D

EHOSS received the technical support service Service 7 within the Horizon Europe project ALFA. A dedicated report prepared for EHOSS maps the existing biogas infrastructure in Denmark, Greece and Italy, and ALFA's public report lists EHOSS among the participants of its validation workshop as a “Farming Consultant”.

ALFA (Scaling up the market uptake of Renewable Energy Systems by unlocking the biogas potential of Agriculture and Livestock FArming) was a Horizon Europe project, grant agreement ID 101075659, run from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2025. The project worked in Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Spain, and supported the uptake of biogas solutions in the livestock sector through technical, business and financial services.

EHOSS's involvement is documented in two places. In the individual technical report for Service 7, EHOSS is named as the “Beneficiary Name”. In ALFA's official public report D4.2 — Report on evaluation of market uptake support measures, Second Round — EHOSS is listed among the participants of the validation workshop, under the stakeholder category “Farming Consultant” (Annex IV, p. 52). We therefore present EHOSS as a recipient of technical support and a participant in expert validation activities — not as a member of the ALFA consortium.

Service 7: Evaluation of Biogas Potential Based on Preliminary Calculations belonged to ALFA's technical support portfolio. The official description of the service focuses on preliminary calculations of biogas potential and on choosing suitable substrate combinations with regard to biogas yield. The dedicated output delivered to EHOSS concentrates mainly on existing biogas plants and infrastructure in Denmark, Greece and Italy.

The analysis covered the regional distribution of biogas plants in the three countries; the ways the biogas produced is used and how far it is upgraded to biomethane; selected parts of the existing infrastructure, including storage, compression and injection into the gas grid; and the sources of feedstock and regional production capacities, as far as the available data allow.

Regional maps of biogas plants in Denmark, Greece and Italy from the Service 7 technical report, each region labelled with its number of plants

Denmark. In 2024, 146 biogas plants were in operation in Denmark. Most of them were in the regions of Syddanmark (49) and Midtjylland (44). The report divides them by the final use of the biogas into direct use, partial upgrading and full upgrading to biomethane.

Greece. In 2024, Greece had 67 operating biogas units with a total installed capacity of 123.67 MW, of which 70 MW came from agriculture and livestock farming.

Italy. According to the report, 2,010 biogas plants were in operation in Italy, with capacities from about 2 kW to 15 MW. Of these, 85 were dedicated to biomethane production, so the spatial data are presented mainly by region.

What it means for EHOSS. The Service 7 output gives EHOSS a reference overview of the scale and geographic distribution of biogas infrastructure in selected European countries. That information forms the expert context for EHOSS's further work on biomass, the circular use of organic materials and cooperation with research and industrial partners.
